A plant’s natural preference
What is Sunrise Seafood Compost?
Our compost is made by recycling various seafood and plant by-products. These sources of nitrogen, nutrients and trace elements are “cooked” at about 160°F for up to 12 months. This turns the ingredients into an odorless, coarsely textured blend, and ideal medium for plants, flowers and trees.
The Sunrise Seafood Compost™ has a high pH level of 7.5, making it a wonderful additive for New England soils. Although not classified as a fertilizer, our compost can be compared to a 6-1-2 rating.
We are dedicated to producing the highest possible quality compost, from recycled materials obtained from Maine’s fishery and wood product industries. Our compost usually contains by products of three or more of the following seafood: salmon, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, herring, crab, lobster, mussels or clams. The other organic materials are either bark chips, peat moss or sawdust. We make the maximum use of these recycled materials. We never use any other materials in our compost.
“Can give anybody a green thumb”
Our rich dark compost is odorless and a pleasure to work with. Its fine organic properties will enhance any soil by supplying organic matter, which increases moisture-holding capacity, providing a great environment for those desirable microorganisms.
The benefits of composting have been known for many years. Now you can save time and assure yourself of a high quality compost by buying our special formula seafood compost.
Our seasoned compost is ready to use directly from the bag. Our 1.25 cubic ft. bags are a convenient way to buy and store the compost. Great for indoor and outdoor plantings.

“I have been using Sunrise Seafood Compost™ for over 5 years for landscape nursery jobs. Using only a shovel full of compost in our testing plantings resulted in plants that were nearly twice the normal size by midsummer.” ~ Robert Bangs, MCN.MCL, Windswept Gardens
